Terms & Conditions

Last updated: 15 October 2026.

These terms are the agreement between you and the people who run this site. By making an account or using the Book of Shadows, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

Who may join

Beyond its front page, the site is for members; joining is free. You must be 18 or older to make an account. One account per person; keep your password to yourself, and tell us at once if you think someone else has used your account.

Your words and pictures are yours

Everything you write, upload or make here stays yours. You let the site store it and show it to the people you choose to share it with, for as long as it is here, and nothing more: we do not sell it, publish it more widely than you chose, or use it to train anything.

Only upload or paste what you have the right to share: your own words and pictures, or material whose owner allows it. Pictures from other websites cannot be linked in; upload a picture you have the right to use instead. Pictures from the site's own library are offered under their licences, and any credit a licence asks for is shown for you.

What is shared with you

When someone shares a page, book, gathering or anything else with you, it is shared with you alone or with the group it was shared to. Do not copy it, pass it on or publish it unless its owner allows it. Material marked oathbound is shared only with those at the oath level: keep it as you would any oath.

A reading or working done for another person is private to the one who wrote it, and is never shared without that person's consent.

How we treat one another

This is a home for witches and pagans of every path, solitary and in groups. Please:

  • respect every member's path, even when it is not yours;
  • never harass, threaten, demean or stalk anyone, here or because of something seen here;
  • post nothing hateful, sexually explicit, violent or illegal;
  • respect closed practices and the communities that hold them, and do not present them as open to all;
  • keep to the rules of any group you join, as its members set them.

Trusted sources

Trusted sources is a catalogue shared by all members. Add only real books, decks, sites, podcasts, courses, music and the like, described accurately, and name a teacher only by the name they teach under in public. An entry you add is seen by you until someone who approves entries approves it; then every member sees it. Those who approve entries may merge a duplicate into the entry already there, carrying its lists, marks and reviews across, or move an entry to a trash it can be brought back from; your note, mark and review stay against an entry no longer in the catalogue.

Your marks, reviews and lists are yours and are seen only by those you share them with. A review is your own opinion: keep to how we treat one another, and say nothing about a person you would not say to them.

Reports, moderation and appeals

Anyone may report a page, words, a message, a gathering, a list, a review or a member. A group's own moderators look at reports about their group first; the site's moderators handle the rest and anything not dealt with in time. Moderators see only what was reported and what is needed to understand it. They may dismiss a report, note it, hide the material while it is looked at, warn, remove someone from a group, suspend an account for a time, or close it. Nothing is deleted by a moderator: hidden material can be restored. You may appeal any action once, and a different moderator will decide.

Herbs, oils, stones and health

The correspondence library records how the craft uses plants, oils, stones and metals. It is lore, not medical advice. Never eat, drink, inhale or put on your skin anything because the library mentions it, and heed every caution shown, including those for pregnancy, children and pets. Speak to a doctor, pharmacist or veterinarian before using any plant or oil on a person or animal.

Membership tiers

Some features may have limits that depend on your membership tier. A tier only limits what you can make; it never decides who can see what you share. If your tier changes, everything you have made stays yours.

Leaving

You may leave at any time, in either of two ways:

  • ask, through the site's contact page, for your account to be closed: what you kept to yourself goes, while pages, books and gatherings you shared, and your words in group discussions and conversations, stay where others depend on them, shown as from "a former member";
  • or ask, through the site's privacy request form, for your information to be erased: everything you own goes, shared or not, while your words in others' discussions and conversations stay, shown as from "a former member", so those still read.

Either way your lists, marks and reviews go, shared or not, and so do entries you added to Trusted sources that were never approved; an approved entry stays for those who use it, shown as added by "a former member".

Before you go you may delete everything you wrote in your private conversations, and you can download everything you keep at any time. The Privacy Policy says more.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, as described above.

The site itself

We work to keep the site safe and running, but it is offered as it is, without any promise that it will always be available or free of faults. Please keep your own copy of anything you cannot bear to lose; "Download everything I keep" on your profile makes one. To the extent the law allows, we are not responsible for loss that comes from using the site or from anything another member does.

Changes to these terms

We may change these terms. When we do, we will update the date above, and for any important change we will tell members on the site before it takes effect. Using the site after a change means you accept it.
